Arrear membership fees should be paid before registering for the 2025 Congress.

SASS Membership Fee Invoice

As a member you’ll receive your annual membership fee Invoice in March of each year. Invoices have a due date of 45 days. We send out invoices to your personal email address.

Please notify us immediately by email at membership@saspine.org if your contact details have changed by providing us with your Name & Surname, personal Contact Number, Email and Membership Number. We recommend providing us with your Practice Email as an alternative email address for any billing or queries from SASS.

If you have unpaid invoices for two (2) years or more we will notify you that your membership is at risk of suspension.

If your invoices remain unpaid after this, your membership will be terminated. You are liable for all membership fees due until we receive your resignation in writing to membership@saspine.org

SASS will send a reminder before suspension membership@saspine.org for any invoice inquiries you may have – please include your Invoice Number, Name & Surname, Contact Number and Email Address. SASS members can reinstate their membership at any time, past membership fees will be due for reinstatement. 

SASS membership is from January – December, annually and SASS membership is not pro-rata full membership is 12 months.

SASS Membership Categories

This membership class shall be limited to Medical Specialists who demonstrate continuing interest in the problems of the spine. Full Members are expected to devote at least 30% of their professional activities to spinal problems and to maintain high ethical standards.

The Medical Specialist must be registered as a Specialist with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa, and be a member of the South African Medical Association (SAMA) and /or be a member of a recognized speciality organization.

A Full Member shall pay annual dues as determined at the Annual General Meeting of the Society (AGM) and may vote and hold office. Full Members shall pay registration fees to attend scientific meetings

Such membership may be granted to practitioners who are not Medical Specialists, provided the nature of their practices demonstrate continuing interest in the problems of the spine and the affairs of the SASS.

Associate Membership may be granted to Medical Specialists in training, Medical Practitioners, Allied Health Professionals including Psychologists, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Chiropractors, Nurse Practitioners and Technical Professionals such as Orthotists.

An Associate Member shall pay annual dues as established at the AGM, may attend annual meetings but will not have voting rights and may not hold office. Associate Members shall pay registration fees to attend scientific meetings

Affiliate (Corresponding) Membership may be granted to a Medical Specialist with an active interest in spinal problems who is not a resident of the Republic of South Africa.

An Affiliate (Corresponding) Member shall pay appropriate annual dues as determined at the AGM. Affiliate Members shall pay registration fees to attend scientific meetings

Emeritus Membership may be granted to a Full, Associate or Affiliate Member who has been an active member of the SASS for at least five (5) years and who requests a change in membership status in writing, after retiring from his/her practice of spinal medicine or upon reaching the age of 65. He/ she must be an active, paid-up member at the time of such request.

An Emeritus Member may retain the privileges of his/her former membership category without the requirement of paying dues. Emeritus Members shall not pay registration fees to attend scientific meetings.

Life Membership may be conferred on persons who are members of the SASS and who have rendered distinguished services to the SASS. Candidates for Life Membership, having been proposed and seconded in writing by at least five (5) Full Members of SASS, shall be elected by a two-thirds majority of the EXCO.

Life Members shall retain all the rights and privileges of Full Membership but will not be liable for payment of annual dues nor will they pay registration fees to attend scientific meetings.

Extraordinary Membership may be granted to scientists who are not Medical Practitioners, Allied Health or Technical Professionals, provided their work gives them a special interest in spinal medicine.

An Extraordinary Member shall have full rights of Membership, shall pay dues as determined at the AGM, but will not have voting rights nor hold office in the SASS. Extraordinary members shall pay registration fees to attend scientific meetings.

Honorary Membership may be conferred on exceptional persons who have been helpful to the Society or have been deemed to deserve this distinction by way of having made exceptional contributions in the field of spinal disorders.

Honorary Members shall not pay annual dues nor have voting rights but may attend annual meetings. Honorary Members shall not pay registration fees to attend scientific meetings.

SASS Membership Terms and Conditions

  1. Membership Fees
    Yearly membership fees as determined by the Executive Committee are payable before the annual congress in May/June.
    Membership fees should be fully paid-up before registering for the Annual Congress.
    Members whose membership fees are in arrears will not qualify for the members discount when registering for
    the annual Congress.
    When any Member shall be in default in the payment of dues for a period of one (1) year from the period for which such dues become payable, his membership may thereupon be terminated by the EXCO.

    New members who are conditionally approved by Exco may qualify for the members discount when registering
    for the annual congress.
  2. Congress Attendance, Questionnaires & Research Activities
    It is a condition of continued membership that Members have to attend at least one (1) annual scientific meeting/congress of the Society every two (2) years and such a member must respond to questionnaires or research queries originating from the office of the South African Spine Society (SASS).
  3. Resignation of SASS Membership
    Any member may resign in writing directed to the Secretary. Please notify us of your resignation in writing.

  4. Termination of Membership
    Membership shall terminate upon resignation, death, dissolution, non-payment of dues for a period of one (1) year, or for non-attendance at the annual scientific meeting for two (2) consecutive years and/or consistent nonparticipation in SASS sponsored research activities.
